AFL news 2022: James Sicily fine for Aaron Naughton headband, Jack Riewoldt, Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs

An AFL star was left in sheer disbelief after when he found out about another players steep fine for taking off an opponents headband.

Perhaps like many, Richmond star Jack Riewoldt was left stunned at the news James Sicily had been fined $1000 for taking off Aaron Naughton’s headband.

Sicily was handed the fine for ‘misconduct’ during a scuffle involving Naughton, during which he took the key forward’s headband off as tempers flared.

The Hawthorn star is challenging the fine via written submission to the AFL Tribunal, but the fact he was fined in the first place stunned Riewoldt during Tuesday night’s AFL 360.

“It was bound to happen and I’m really proud of James Sicily, because someone had to do it,” Riewoldt said wryly as he considered him for a ‘rascal’ nomination.

“Chatting to Marcus Bontempelli when he’s been in here, he just marches to the beat of his own drum about Naughton, which I really enjoy.

“It did not surprise me that James Sicily was the man to do it.”

When told Sicily was fined $1000, Riewoldt was visibly baffled.

“He did not! Shut up, turn it up! Are you serious? You are kidding me.”

Fellow guest, Geelong forward Tom Hawkins, was also miffed by the decision

“I love that about James Sicily,” he said.

“He’s one of those players to play against that’s not much fun, you’re bound to be on the end of some niggle.

“It’s stiff that it’s $1000.”
