After Life season 3: Ricky Gervais’ beloved dog is ready for even bigger stardom

After Life fans have gravitated to the Netflix show’s brilliant cast in recent years, but it’s Tony Johnson’s (Ricky Gervais) dog Brandy that they’ve really fallen in love with.

The third and final season dropped on the streaming service this week, marking the end of fans’ time with widowed Tony, who struggled through his grief over the loss of his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman).

As Tony almost gave up hope and started the series with a severe depression, he was gradually supported by his colleagues at the Tambury Gazette, but it was someone else who ultimately saved him – his dog Brandy.

But wanting to know how the dog got involved with the show in the first place, Metro.co.uk decided to catch up with his owner.

Ashley Foster of Stunt Dogs and Animals takes care of Brandy – real name Anti – on a daily basis, and accompanies her in all her work.

He revealed that fans will soon be able to see Anti elsewhere, as she has had a busy filming schedule over the past few months.

Ashley told us: “She’s got loads to come, she’s going to be in the new Dungeons and Dragons – we went to the cinema in Northern Ireland last summer.

“She’s also in Sherwood, which is coming out soon, as a police dog, and she’s just been in Landscapers and Ragdoll, again as a police dog.

“She does a lot of police and sniffer dog work, Midsomer Murders and all that stuff!”

He then explained how Anti was cast on the show, after Ricky cast her himself.

Ashley revealed: ‘Anti did a lot of work on many other movies and TV shows before doing After Life, so when we got an email from Ricky Gervais saying he liked the look of Anti for this new Netflix show he’s doing, we’ve arranged a meet and greet on Hampstead Heath.

“We got there, we met him and he walked around and we showed him everything she can do.

“She goes to a brand, she does all that stuff, she can take a snap and, he picked her on the spot!”

He went on to explain how directors can get in touch directly if they spot the perfect dog, as they have profiles of all their wonderful stunt performers on their website.

‘Ricky is great. I mean, he loves dogs and the show was written with the dog as the main character, which is not that common in our business.

A lot of Anti’s work is sort of in the background, she plays police dogs, she plays army dogs and it’s not often people actually know the name of the dog on the show .

“That side that’s written into the story and plays a huge role in the story has been really, really fun, as I say because she’s typecast as a police dog most of the time.”

“When she plays, most of the time she barks or looks mean. On Afterlife, she played a normal dog for a change, and she got to show off more of the cute things she can do.

“So yes, it’s basically played in real life,” explained his master.

But how long will it stay on our screens? Well, Anti isn’t going anywhere yet.

Ashley said: ‘I mean she’s 10 now so she’ll be retiring in the next… well I don’t know when but with dogs you can’t say there’s a specific time when they will end.

“But she’s really fit, she’s really healthy, she likes to work out. So, as she slows down, we’ll only place her for the more sedentary jobs, but yeah, she’s still pretty busy! »

After Life season 3 can stream on Netflix now.
