‘Barbarian’ ear cropping kits for dog owners pulled from Ebay and Etsy after outrage

Online retail giants Etsy and Ebay have removed “barbaric” dog ear grow kits from their websites after sparking outrage from vets and activists.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has written to the companies after finding the cruel kits – which include a scalpel, forceps, ten blades and a pair of special scissors – were on sale from international retailers.

Cropping, also known as docking, is where a young dog’s earlobes are cropped.

It is illegal in the UK under animal welfare law unless it is done for medical reasons.

But some owners have been known to cut off the ears of puppies to make them “harder.”

RSPCA says cruel ear cutting should be banned worldwide

The BVA has led a campaign to ban the practice and to educate pet owners that cutting off or straightening their pets’ ears is cruel.

President Justine Shotton wrote a letter to express her members’ concerns “about the easy availability of ear straightening or correction aids.”

Dr Shotton said: “We took action after being made aware by a few vets of the availability of ear trimming kits on eBay UK. Our search also found a number of listings for ear straightening accessories. ear sold through several other major websites.

“The quick and positive action from both major retailers is a small but significant animal welfare win for our #CutTheCrop campaign.

“Although the government has promised to act to close the legal loophole that allows cropped dogs to be brought into the country from abroad, the availability of these accessories online remains difficult to solve.”

It comes after Amazon launched an investigation when it was discovered the kits had been sold on its site.

An RSPCA spokesperson demanded action when the cruel kits were spotted on sale for as little as £31 in 2020.

The charity said ear cropping should be banned worldwide.

The spokesperson said at the time: “We are extremely concerned about the ease with which home grow kits can be purchased online and will be writing to retailers selling them urging them to remove them.

“Ear cropping is a painful process to remove part or all of a dog’s ear for cosmetic reasons. It can cause serious, long-term health and behavioral issues for the dog.

“Ear cropping is illegal in the UK, but unfortunately it is still legal in other countries, such as parts of Europe and the US.

“Even in countries where ear cropping is not illegal, we don’t think these kits should be sold – it’s not something anyone should be doing to their dogs at home.”
