Birds of prey given Scottish sanctuary thanks to community buyout of land | Scotland

A former grouse-shooting moor is to become a haven for some of Britain’s most persecuted birds of prey as part of a multimillion-pound community purchase.

A new nature reserve will be created in the uplands of Galloway, in the south of Scotland, following an agreement between the Langholm Initiative, a community development trust, and the Duke of Buccleuch, formerly Scotland’s largest landowner.

More than 5,300 acres of private land have been brought into communal ownership after the completion of a £2.2 million deal, announced yesterday. It doubles the total amount of land to more than 10,500 acres after a deal completed two years ago worth almost £4 million.
