Blind dog rescued from life in chains gets adopted by lady who ‘fell in love’ with him – World News

Exclusive:

Erin Boyd, 42, from New York, USA, rescued eight-year-old blind dog Stevie from a life tied up in chains, and fell so in love with him, she just had to adopt him permanently

Erin hopes Stevie can feel her love

A blind dog who spent eight years tied up in chains has finally been given a second chance at life and a safe place to call home.

Foster carer, Erin Boyd, 42 from New York, USA, says it was “love at first sight” when she agreed to temporarily look after Stevie Wondie from Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue.

The neglected pup arrived in her care in February 2021 with two eyes but no vision, after suffering with glaucoma and heartworm disease.

And exactly one year on, Erin made it official and permanently adopted Stevie, calling him her own.

She told The Mirror: “He is a huge love bug and he’s at his happiest when he’s snuggled up to his favorite people.”

Stevie ended up at an animal shelter after being detained from an individual’s yard with another dog who was named Wonder.

Erin kept his name Stevie Wondie – after the American singer-songwriter – and taught him how to navigate himself around her house independently.

The rescue pup instantly warmed to Erin and found his favorite spot on her sofa, cuddled up beside her.

Stevie was very unwell at first and it was suggested that Erin euthanize him, as vets didn’t believe he would make it through surgery.

“I had to try – I loved him instantly,” Erin said. “And I am so glad I did because he made it through the surgery and heartworm treatment with no problems. He is a warrior!”

To make sure Stevie wasn’t left with any pain, he had both eyes removed and sown up in November 2021.

Despite being without vision, Erin says his disability doesn’t impact his life at all.

“He is still as perfect as ever and gets around his house very well! Once in a while he will bump into something, but I help guide him if it’s needed,” she explained.

“It probably affects me more than him, because as his momma I want him to be able to see me and all the amazing things around him. But I know (and hope) he can feel my love for him.”

In February 2022, Erin made the decision to adopt Stevie herself and shared the amazing news with his 13,000 Instagram followers online.

His fans were overwhelmed with joy, with one person commenting: “I literally cried. I am so happy for you both! You are an angel and thank you for opening your heart and your home to Stevie.”

Erin says strangers are always incredibly kind about Stevie’s appearance and he is “very, very loved”.

“I think my neighbors knew his name before they knew mine,” she added.

Stevie inspires Erin to “never give up and to always trust your heart” – a motto she promises to live by with him at her side.
