Cape St. Mary’s Residents Concerned Over Dead Birds Found Near Bird Sanctuary

Dead seabirds litter a beach only a few miles from the bird sanctuary at Cape St. Mary’s, and residents are concerned.

It’s believed that the avian flu has spread to the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas, killing a large number of wild birds such as turrs, gannets and puffins.

Samples of dead birds collected over the past while are being tested at Memorial University, but biologist Bill Montevecchi is certain that avian flu will be confirmed.

Gordon Careen normally goes to Point Lance beach every day, but not now. He’s concerned about the dead birds and hopes that government sends some people in to clean them up.
