David Stewart – 40 years recording bird calls – The Science Show

During the 1960s and 1970s, his work took him all over Australia. He started ticking off birds he’d seen. He collected ticks. Then, in 1980, a friend suggested he move into sound recording. He started recording on cassette tapes. And when digital sound recording arrived, he started again! In 1994, he released his first CD, Voices of Subtropical Rainforest. There are 14 CDs featuring birds and frogs. And now, there’s an app, Stewart Australian Bird Calls. David Stewart speaks to David Fisher about his life recording bird calls, changes he’s noticed over the decades, and the importance of calls for ornithologists.
