A Norfolk businessman has brought the spa to people’s doorsteps after building a sauna in a converted horse box.
What started as a containment project has now turned into a huge success for Diss’ Tom Sutton.
The 32-year-old said it was his love of wild swimming that inspired the idea to build a mobile sauna – to combat the cold after a swim.
And during the coronavirus pandemic, in January last year, Mr Sutton and a friend decided to “go for it”.
“I did some Googling and figured out pretty much what you need to do to build a sauna,” he said.
“So we removed the horse box and I approached a few sauna suppliers. They sent us everything we needed and rough instructions and we were able to get it set up.
“At first, we didn’t know what to do with it. We had plenty of saunas with our friends, but it wasn’t necessarily meant to be a business.
After winning their first pitch at Dilham Hall Retreats in North Walsham last summer, Mr Sutton realized just how much demand there was for his unique business.
Since then the Sauna Box has been hired out at various events including yoga and surf retreats in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Earlier this year, Mr Sutton, who grew up in Southrepps, also introduced ice baths for hire alongside the sauna.
He added: “My interest in all of this started when I was living in London about five years ago. I started swimming in cold water and someone told me to combine it with a sauna.
“Before that, I was a project manager for a property developer. It was very different. But I had the whole crisis of the early 30s, so I quit my job and moved to Norfolk in 2019.
“I actually trained to do massage – it was supposed to be my main activity – but the sauna cabin completely took off.
“It was definitely unexpected. But I really appreciate it. There are so many benefits to cold and hot therapies. It’s good to share that and help people feel better. is quite special.
