NORMAL, illustrated – Anyone driving or walking by Hancock Stadium Friday morning was greeted with the beautiful sounds of whistles and music coming from inside, as the Illinois State football team officially opened fall camp in its preparation for the upcoming 2022 season.

For the first time since March, the entire Redbird football team gathered for practice on a cloudy and cool morning for football. The team took the field in helmets only, as they work through their NCAA mandated acclimation period before putting on full pads mid next week. The ‘Birds worked for nearly two hours, focusing on technique and tempo throughout the workout.

Practice highlights:
• After a pep talk from head coach Brock Spackpractice opened with a team stretch and a special teams circuit, before the team broke off into position groups to run through individual drills.
• After the individual period, the focus shifted to the first of two 7-on-7 sessions … the first and second team units took one half of the field, while the third and fourth team squads, featuring quarterbacks Tommy Rittenhouse, Timothy Dorsey other Jimmy Makuh worked on the opposite half of the turf.
• Transfer quarterbacks Zack Annexstad finished the drill 6-of-8, with three completions to tight end Bryson Deming and two to Jabari KheperaJackson Waring took the second-team reps and finished 5-for-8 with two connections to Jalen Carr and one each to Daniel Sobkowicz, Brett Spaulding other TreShawn Watson.
• On the defensive side Frankie West, Jacob Bellizzi other Jeff Bowens each recorded pass breakups.
• The blitz, 9-on-7 and perimeter sessions followed but were limited with the no-contact restrictions, with highlights including another breakup by Bowens and an interception by Bellizzi on a tipped ball.
• The second 7-on-7 session followed, this time with Rittenhouse joining Annexstad on the South end of the field … this time, Annexstad was a perfect 7-for-7 with three completions to Tristan Baileytwo to Deming and one each to Jerome Buckner and his brother, Brock Annexstad.
• Rittenhouse was 6-for-7 during the drill with a pair of connections each to Scotty Presson Jr. other Camo Nelson.
• The team session followed as the momentum went back and forth between the offense and defense … a sack early in the first possession by the first-team unit by Lewan put the offense in a bind, but a 12-yard completion from Annexstad to Buckner moved the chains … On the next possession, a pass breakup by Damian Jackson other Larry Tracy III once again put the offense on its heels, but a strong first-down run by Rashad Lampkin ended things on a high note … pass breakups on the next possession by Keondre Jackson other Dillon Gearhart continued the strong play for the defense, but it was Lampkin who got the last laugh with a would-be 30-plus yard touchdown run to cap things off.
• Practice ended with kickers Josh Jasek other Jack Takerian each taking turns booting field goals and extra point attempts through the uprights, as the defense worked on the opposite side of the field on schemes to block kicks.
