Gordon Elliott: Runs Itswhatunitesus in the Leopardstown bumper on Saturday

Gordon Elliott trusted Itswhatunitesus in the Future Stars Bumper (4.25) to close day one of the Dublin Racing Festival on Saturday.

Easy Vega, trained by Willie Mullins, is the big favorite for the Grade 2 clash, but Elliott’s charge goes into the chase with a win on his first start – a six-length success at Navan in December of two miles on yielding ground.

The Leopardstown track is expected to have the same conditions on Saturday and Elliott’s single bumper entry would have worked very impressively on home soil.

Speaking on This Weekend’s Racing Post’s What A Shout (available on our YouTube channel) about what his best bet for the weekend would be, Elliott said: “I look forward to all Grade 1s and obviously it would be very special if Zanahiyr could beat Honeysuckle, but if I had a ten free bet I would have it on Itswhatunitesus.

“I’m stepping away from Grade 1s and Patrick’s horse will be tough to beat, but [Itswhatunitesus] is 4-1.

“He’s a very good horse. I’m not saying he’s the best horse in the yard or anything, but he’s a very good horse. He’s from Walk In The Park and he’s a weak horse that will improve next year.”

Dublin Racing Festival advice: Why this horse can win at Leopardstown this weekend

Itswhatunitesus is a best-priced 25-1 for the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham in March, a market led by another top Cullentra yard prospect from Elliott to American Mike.

“He worked at Navan last week and he was very, very good,” the coach said. “He’s nowhere near American Mike at this point, but he galloped with The Tide Turns last week and galloped just as well as he did.

Itswhatunitesus: Gordon Elliott’s best bet of the weekend

“I don’t know if that’s enough to win because Willie’s horse looked great in Leopdardstown, but he’s definitely one for the future.”

“It baffles me to think there is a £20,000 hurdle with just three riders and two of them are Irish”

Away from Leopardstown, Elliott also runs Where It All Began in a novice 3m hurdle at Musselburgh (1.29), but the trainer expressed surprise at the run attracting only three entrants, including two Irish.

The Elliott runner and John McConnell-trained Bardenstown Lad, both registered for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle in Cheltenham, take on Lyrical Genius for Charlie Longsdon for a £20,000 prize.

Where it all started ran over hurdles only twice, losing his first tag at Tramore on New Years Day and the Irish coach had a hard-hitting response to the small field.

“I’m a big fan of just putting a horse in a race that I think it can win,” he said. “It baffles me to think there is a £20,000 hurdle with just three riders and two of them are Irish.

“For me it’s a big concern when you see all these big British owners in Ireland. Why are there only three riders? It’s probably not something worth discussing , but it’s a big, big worry for me that there can only be that amount of runners in a race like this.

“Our horse is a great hunter in the making, John McConnell’s [Bardenstown Lad] seems to be the one to beat in the standings, but our horse has a chance.”
