How scientists may look to birds as a first storm warning

When severe storms develop, teams of meteorologists watch to keep you safe. If the National Weather Service sees what it believes is a severe storm or a tornado forming, it will activate sirens, warning everyone to seek shelter.

It is rare to have more than a couple minutes of warning when a tornado is about to strike. Research published in the journal “Current Biology” shows that, while we wait for scientists to continue learning about severe weather, we might want to watch the birds to get a much earlier warning.

While tracking a population of golden-winged warblers, a research team led by ecologist Henry Streby at the University of California-Berkeley discovered birds in eastern Tennessee fled a day before the arrival of a very powerful storm system.
