The sweet way one cat crunches her food has delighted the internet thanks to the adorable and relaxing nature of the videos capturing her eating.
Luna has gained more than 2.8 million followers on TikTok where videos of her enjoying treats are watched by people around the world.
One viewer of the viral videos wrote: “The only ASMR I like,” and another said they had been so hypnotized by the video they hadn’t realized it had repeated six times already.
Often shared with the hashtag #asmr, Luna’s delightful crunchy eating has been liked to popular online videos featuring ASMR.
ASMR is the second most popular search term on YouTube. It stands for autonomous sensory meridian response and refers to an emotional state experienced when people hear, see or feel certain things. Popular types of ASMR include whispering, light touch, and perfect patterns.
In a 2018 study undertaken by psychology lecturer and the University of Essex, Giulia Lara Poerio and others, 112 participants—half of whom reported experiencing ASMR and half who did not—were hooked up to electrodes while they watched a video of ASMR towel folding. While watching the videos, participants’ heart rates fell and they perspired more, indicating heightened emotional arousal.
More than just a relaxing feeling, the study found that the notable fall in heart rates of participants (-3.41 bpm) were comparable to those observed during mindfulness and acceptance based interventions for anxiety, suggesting that the cardiac effects of ASMR may have practical significance for many people.
The study’s conclusion noted that ASMR is a reliable and physiologically-rooted experience that may have therapeutic benefits for both physical and mental health.
One of Luna’s videos has now been viewed on Instagram more than 700,000 times and has more than 75,000 likes. Delighted by the video, one viewer commented: “How did she get so crunch-tastic?” and another user wrote: “The nose scronches are my favorite.”
Luna’s owners share the satisfying videos of the famous cat on her Instagram and TikTok pages frequently, where fans send in art and even videos of their own cats watching Luna’s content.
“She is so cute,” wrote one viewer on Instagram. “In love with the faces she makes while crunching. You have me giving treats to my cat while watching his face closely. Nothing like Luna!”
“You’d think watching them eat snacks time after time would get old, but nope,” said one commenter.
