Max Purcell loses Australia’s ATP Cup opener to Italian Jannik Sinner after late call

Australia’s ATP Cup campaign is off to a losing start after injury drama forced a late change to the singles lineup.

James Duckworth had to withdraw from the opening match against Italian world number 10 Jannik Sinner just hours before the game started.

Max Purcell fought hard but was outscored by the man ranked 166 positions higher than him and ultimately lost 6-1.6-3 in just over an hour at Sydney’s Ken Rosewall Arena.

“For my first game of the year [could not have gone] better, “said 20-year-old Sinner.

Australia’s number one Alex de MiƱaur then plays top-ranked Italian Matteo Berrettini.

The Australian doubles team of John Peers and Luke Saville will face Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini.
