Minutemen take down MacCo champ Birds

The Southwestern Piasa Birds’ credentials as Macoupin County champions carried little weight with their county rival from Bunker Hill on Saturday night.

The Minutemen mounted a big lead through three quarters and finished off the Birds 55-37 in a nonconference boys basketball game at Hlafka Hall in Bunker Hill. The Minutemen improve to 8-15. Southwestern has lost three in a row since winning the county tourney and drops to 9-15.

Bunker Hill built leads of 16-9 after one quarter, 29-18 at the half and 46-23 to start the fourth quarter. Senior Carson Cooley scored 10 points and freshman Ian Brantley added seven points for the Birds. Southwestern shot 30 percent (14 of 46) from the field, including 2 of 17 from 3-point range, and made 7 of 21 free throws.

58 Waltonville, 31 Carlinville – A scoreless second quarter left the Cavaliers down 29-7 at halftime and the Spartans won in an early game at the day-long Pinckneyville Shootout at Duster Thomas Gym. Carlinville is 9-13.

Aaron Wills scored 11 points, with both Mason Duckels and Ayden Tiburzi getting seven points for the Cavaliers. Makabe Devor’s 18 points paced Waltonville, which added 12 points apiece from Jordan Reynolds and Seth Karnes.

Concord Triopia 67, Carrollton 66 – The Hawks got a big night with 35 points from Kyle Leonard, but the Trojans rallied from 10-points down to win the championship of the 17th Triopia Tournament in Concord. The Trojans are 22-4.

Carrollton’s Braylon Rhoades got a layup off an assist from Leonard tied the game at 66 with 48 seconds left. Triopia’s Cordell Walker hit one of two free throws with six seconds remaining and the Hawks missed a 3 at the buzzer to give the Trojans the victory.

Metro-East Lutheran 70, Belleville West 59 – The Knights erased a four-point first-quarter deficit to lead 33-29 at halftime and beat the Maroons at Belleville. MEL is 13-8. West is 6-16.

Raymond Lincolnwood 40, Staunton 37 – The Lancers rallied from being down 22-11 at halftime to beat the Bulldogs at Raymond. Lincolnwood is 10-10. Staunton, which was outscored 19-8 in the final quarter, is 6-15.

Greenfield 64, Pawnee 40 – The Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games by beating the Indians in Palmyra. Greenfield is 16-8.

Mississippi Valley Christian second in tourney – The Maryville Christian Lions pulled away from a 20-19 halftime lead by outscoring MVC 20-11 in the third quarter and beat the Warriors 54-40 in the title game of the 36th MVC Invitational Tournament in Alton.

Tommy Kunz scored 18 points for MVC and joined Joey Kunz on the all-tournament team. The Lions got 17 points from Blake Peek and 16 points from Dawson Hendrick.

In the semifinals earlier Saturday, MVC defeated North County Christian 40-37. Joey Kunz’s 10-foot jumper with less than 30 seconds remaining gave the Warriors a lead and Tommy Kunz added a pair of free throws to seal the victory. Joey Kunz scored 17 points and Tommy Kunz had 10 points for the Warriors, who improve to 17-6.
