Prince Harry files claim for right to pay for ‘necessary police protection’ in UK after ‘threats to him and his family’

Prince Harry wants to take his son Archie and seven-month-old daughter Lilibet to visit the UK but fears he and his family “will not be able to return” due to inadequate security protection.

The Duke of Sussex has filed for judicial review to allow him to personally pay for police protection when his family returns home to the UK.

Harry’s seven-month-old daughter, Lilibet, has not yet met her great-grandmother, the Queen, but her legal representative says her family will not have enough security protection to visit the country.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex lost taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping down from their roles as senior members of the royal family in 2020.

The couple, now residing in California, were forced to reveal that they had implemented “privately funded security arrangements” in the US.

But Harry’s legal representatives now argue that they cannot bring their children home as their private security team “cannot replicate” the “necessary police protection” while they are in the UK.

“Prince Harry inherited a security risk at birth, for life,” said a statement issued by a legal representative.

“He remains sixth in line to the throne, served two tours of combat duty in Afghanistan, and in recent years his family has been the target of well-documented neo-Nazi and extremist threats.

“Although his role within the Institution has changed, his profile as a member of the Royal Family has not. Neither has the threat to him and his family.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex personally fund a private security team for their family, but that security cannot replicate the police protection needed while in the UK.

“In the absence of such protection, Prince Harry and his family cannot return home.”

Prince Harry’s request for a judicial review comes after a security incident in London in July 2021, where he returned to the UK for the unveiling of the memorial statue of Diana, Prince of Wales.

His car is understood to have been chased by photographers after he left a charity event.
