Rafael Nadal pulls out of Wimbledon, Nick Kyrgios advances to final

The tennis legend had overcome the abdominal strain to battle back from two sets to one down against American Taylor Fritz in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

“I can’t win two matches under these circumstances,” Nadal said, referring to his match against Kyrgios and then the final if he were to win the semi.

“The most important thing is happiness… I can’t risk that match and stay two to three months outside of the competition.”

Nadal maintained it was the correct decision to not withdraw against Fritz, an epic match he won after dominating a final set tiebreaker, 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4).

Had Nadal pulled out during that clash, Fritz would have progressed to the semis against Kyrgios.

“Yeah, [it] it was the right decision because I finished the match,” said Nadal.

“I won the match. I did the things that I felt [right] in every single moment.

“I am not the kind of player and the kind of person that when you make decisions, I am going to look back and say, ‘I should not have done that, or I should do another thing’.

“I didn’t want to pull out, to leave the court in the middle of a quarter-finals match.”

He said he slowed down his service speed and movement against Fritz to try and manage the injury.

“I finished with a victory… the tests say I have [an abdominal tear],” he said.
