Southampton at ‘higher risk’ of bird flu, Government map shows

MOST of Southampton is at “higher risk” of bird flu, according to a Government map.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency has issued a warning to residents in the highlighted areas.

According to its database, these zones are at higher risk when it comes to Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu.

This comes after cases were confirmed near Eastleigh on March 13.

A protection zone was put in place by The Department for Environmental Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Residents were written to across Eastleigh, Bishopstoke, Bishop’s Waltham, and Hedge End.

Residents are being urged to report any dead birds they may come across including swans, geese and ducks, or gulls and birds of prey.

They can do this by ringing the Defra helpline on 03459 335577.
