T20 World Cup Final 2022 England v India

A dire weather forecast for Melbourne on Sunday has left T20 World Cup organizers the bizarre prospect of awarding joint winners for the first time in the event’s history.

Melbourne’s forecast is for up to 20mm of rain and a “possibly severe” thunderstorm later in the afternoon. The final between England and Pakistan is scheduled for 7pm.

There is a reserve day set aside for Monday – where play would commence at 3pm – but the forecast for then is not much better.

Rain is forecast more or less all day Monday, with the chance of a storm in the evening as well.

While in the group stages a minimum of five overs must be bowled to constitute a game, that figure is 10 for the final. If play starts on Sunday and cannot be restarted, the game will continue on Monday from where it left off.

But in an effort to get a result, should the match spill to Monday, there will be no time limit on how long the match can take. Usually T20 matches run to tight schedules to ensure the game wraps up in about three and a half hours.

A myriad of logistical reasons mean start time on Sunday cannot be moved, nor can the match be moved to the nearby Marvel Stadium – which has a roof. Most notable of them is the drop-in pitches used during the Big Bash have not yet been laid.

A wash-out and a shared trophy would cap off a disastrous tournament for weather in the venue – three games in the group stages, including a crucial clash between England and Australia, were washed out in the Victorian capital, while another was shortened.

England’s match against Australia was washed out, and they found themselves on the wrong side of the Duckworth-Lewis method when rain hit in their match against Ireland.

England put themselves into the final after a 10-wicket thrashing of India in Adelaide on Thursday night, after Pakistan booked their spot with a win over New Zealand in Sydney on Wednesday.
