gerry american was second in two of his three bumper starts and had a promising start over hurdles when he finished second in a warm novice at Exeter last month. He was below his best when he was a distant second on the same course on New Years Day but suffered a cut then and is best judged on what he showed on his debut in hedges. This form is the best there is and it seems like a good opportunity for him to stand out.

check it out was not at his best when he came fifth in the Silver Cup at Ascot last month, but that effort can be excused as it only came a fortnight after finishing third in a grueling edition of the Becher Chase. He’s had six weeks to freshen up, coach Nigel Twiston-Davies is in excellent form and that’s a marked drop in the rating, so he has strong claims.

pass secrets had little impact over hurdles but has fared better since being sent off in pursuit, finishing second twice. He remains on the same note as his last two efforts and might have a little more to offer on the fences, so he looks worthwhile to side with.

Aristocrat showed useful form on the flat in France, finishing placed in a few Listed races at Saint-Cloud, and has since been bought for €140,000. He’s in excellent hands with Richard Newland and this exciting hurdler rookie starts in what doesn’t appeal to a solid run. It should be noted that he holds entries in the Supreme and Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival.

flying nun is a half-sister to the intelligent Angels Breath and she has shown enough promise in three starts in novice and virgin hurdles to suggest she can prove better than that opening mark of 94. She has shown a little more than she did before at mid-division at Ludlow last month and improvement is expected on that first handicap for in-form Emma Lavelle.

Lickpenny Larry found his stamina stretched when he hit three miles at Warwick on New Years Eve, but the way he got through that run suggested he had a decent heart and should be noted when he fell travelling. He drops to two and a half miles here and has been lightened an additional 2 pounds in the weights, so he draws attention to 5 pounds less than the mark he challenged last season. He could prove difficult to wind up if he gets into a rhythm up front.

Hardy Fella formed with some promise when finishing second on his Fairyhouse debut in October and he raised his game to finish fourth in a listed bumper at Cheltenham in November. A repeat of that form would make him tough to beat here on his first start for Chris Gordon having been bought out of the yard of Shark Hanlon.
