Coronation Street star Will Mellor had The One Show fans in stitches after he recalled the horrific moment he accidentally put down a stranger’s cat.
During Friday’s (April 1) installation of the popular BBC One teatime talk show, Alex Jones and Alex Scott welcomed the Two Pints of Larger star onto the show alongside actors Suranne Jones, Ralf Little and Hollywood heartthrob Chris Pine.
With a sofa full of animal lovers, Alex inquired about the star’s pets eagerly waiting to greet them at home, but viewers were shocked to hear about the 45-year-old’s experience as a pet owner.
The TV hunk confessed how he had a love/hate relationship with his Bengal cat after he ran away from home at a young age and didn’t come home for nine months.
And the actor was devastated to learn that the cat has come home with throat cancer which forced the doting pet owner to put him down.
Little did he know that he had accidentally put a stranger’s cat down after his real cat came waltzing through the house just two weeks later.
He told viewers: “That [picture] was when I was enjoying my cats when they were little and then that cat ran away.
“He was a Bengal, and he didn’t come back for nine months and then when he came back, he sadly had cancer of the throat.
“I was talking to the doctors and they said he had to be put down, so I was crying with my daughter when we put the cat down and had his ashes and then my cat walked through the door two weeks later.
“So I had put someone else’s cat down,” he explained as both presenters hung their heads’s in shame as they processed the horrific story on air.
“I know, I’ve still got the cat on the windowsill, I don’t know who’s it is, I don’t know who’s cat it is.”
The star went on to explain how both cats had a problem with their internal chip which led the vet and the owner to believe the first cat was his and therefore allowed him to euthanize the animal.
He went on: “The thing is, I thought it was my cat – the vet said this is your cat. [He said] There’s a problem with the chip ’cause we had it chipped.
“[But] Then my cat walked in and he had been run over and it cost me thousands, I got it fixed and then he left again.”
